Fr Alan's Surprise Party

What do you get when a hundred ten or so parishioners sneak up on their Rector to let him know they love him and appreciate him and cherish the past five years together and hope for many more??

SURPRISE PARTY!!

May 31st at Ron and Kay Mobley’s house, that’s just what happened. Every household on our parish list with a phone number (in Central Ky) was invited with a call. Everyone met at church and convoyed to the Mobley’s. Then creeping up to the house with whispers and muffled car doors, the throng poured through the back gates of the yard all at once, bringing instant party: in minutes tables, food, coolers full of drinks appeared. No one got thrown in the pool. The children of the parish presented Father Sutherland with a “Children of the World” stole purchased with their own money from memorizing their bible verses.

St. Timothy’s/Barnes Mountain

barnes mtnA group from St. John’s spent the week of July 9 2007 on Barnes Mountain in Estill County. They slept and ate at St. Timothy’s Church which is a mission of the Diocese of Lexington under the leadership of Fr. Bryant Kibler. With Fr. Kibler’s supervision, they finished siding a house, replaced a rotten floor, re-puttied windows, and replaced window frames. They also did some work on the new dormitory at St. Timothy’s.

When you hear “mission trip” you might think of going to Peru or the Sudan or maybe New Orleans to help with hurricane relief or famine, things far away and catastrophic. Now imagine a place only a little more than an hour’s drive from downtown Lexington, with beautiful mountain scenery and a very different way of life from yours and mine. Barnes Mountain.

barnes2barnes3St. Timothy’s hosts work groups from all over the United States who come to do upgrading and home improvement projects for the people of Barnes Mountain. This summer only two groups so far are from this diocese. Maybe it is hard to see the need so close to home. In the first few years after the establishment of St. Timothy’s, St. John’s was an important contributor of time and talent to this mission effort. Hopefully St. John’s can once again be of assistance to the people of this neighboring area for years to come.

Vacation Bible School

VBS2Reuse - Recycle - Rejoice!!!

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

VBS1We need to protect, nurture, and love the earth that God gave us.
We can all help by learning about and PRACTICING the three R's:
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!  Practicing all three of these activities every day is not only important for a healthy earth, but it can be fun too.

And let’s not forget to REJOICE!!!
Rejoice in what the Lord has given us:
the trees, the bees, and the deep blue seas.

Relay for Life

The 2007 Relay for Life was June 8th - 9th. St. John's put together a team for the third year in a row. Carol Filson graciously offered to lead our team. There was a record number of teams signed up across the community, and over $20,000 has been raised in Woodford County to date. This was a 12 hour relay and a wonderful way for St. John's to support our entire community.

Reading Camp

The Woodford County Reading Camp met for its first session at St. John’s June 11 – 15.  Led by Sara Meekins and Linda Reeves, approximately twenty children spent the week working on reading skills and taking part in confidence building activities. The campers arrived at St. John’s at 8:30 each day, had breakfast and then rotated through six learning centers during the morning hours. After lunch, they participated in a variety of activities including swimming, trips to the Library, an afternoon at the Life Adventure Camp, crafts and a picnic and discovery trip to Salato Wildlife Center in Frankfort.  Some of the afternoon activities took place at St. John’s and everyone returned to the church for a sing-along and dismissal at 5:00 each day.

The Woodford County Reading Camp was envisioned as a community effort and has been blessed with an outpouring of support. Three lunches were donated (by First Presbyterian Church, Little Caesars and Chapter S, P.E.O.). Breakfast for two days was donated by McDonalds.  Craft supplies and tobacco stakes to make walking sticks were donated by friends and parishioners. The Library opened its arms to us. The Country Club gave us the use of their pool. And most importantly, teachers and support staff personnel stepped up to make this ministry work. More information about reading camp.

Derby Party

derbyOn the first Saturday in May the bugler stepped onto the grainy track and blew the sweet notes of ‘Call to the Post’ and they headed onto the track (a.k.a. Big Sink Road). Over 75 parishioners and friends of St. John’s headed to the lovely ancestral home of the Kinkead family ‘curated’ by Charlie and Cindy, who were most gracious hosts. The rain threatened, and made good on its threat on the way out, but by post time, the dark clouds had skittered away leaving only fluffy white reminders of the storm that had passed by town. They arrived by ones and twos and threes and more, many smartly attired with bows and bouquets on the ladies heads and colorful ties and hats on the gentlemen. Some wore long skirts, some jeans, some string ties and all were topped by a smile. A banquet table was spread fit for king (but neither he nor the Queen stopped by!) and that was just the appetizers. More

The Parish Hall filled with food and fun and music provided by the Dazzling Disc Jockey and MC Duo of John and Teresa Range. Young and older alike had a wonderful time dancing. Many thanks to Fr. Alan and Judi for a great time!

A large crowd filled the Kentucky Capitol Rotunda, including many people from St. John’s, there to congratulate Jane and celebrate her wonderful honor. More
